Intergenerational mobility, sibling inequality and borrowing constraints

چکیده

This paper studies differences in social mobility between rich and poor families. The paper shows that borrowing constraints retard social mobility among the poor by preventing poor parents from investing optimally in the their children’s human capital. This evidence contradicts several recent studies that argue that innate ability is the overriding determinant of socioeconomic performance in the United States. The paper also shows that sibling inequality appears to be independent of parental wealth, which in turn contradicts the predictions of various economic models of resource allocation within the family.  2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. [Running title: Intergenerational Mobility]

A large literature on ‘endogenous inequality’ has argued that persistent differences in macroeconomic performance across countries can be explained by historical inequality, owing to indivisibilities in occupational choice and borrowing constraints. These models are characterized by homogenous agents, a continuum of steady states and lack of mobility in every steady state. We show that introduc...

Plastic and immobile: Unequal intergenerational mobility by genetic sensitivity score within sibling pairs.

Contrary to traditional biological arguments, the differential susceptibility model suggests genotype may moderate rather than mediate parent-child economic similarity. Using family fixed effects models of Add Health sibling data, I investigate the relationship between an index of sensitive genotypes and intergenerational mobility. Full, same sex sibling comparisons hold constant parental chara...

Earnings Mobility in the US: A New Look at Intergenerational Inequality

This study uses a new data set which merges the Social Security earnings histories of parents and children in the 1984 Survey of Income and Program Participation to measure the intergenerational elasticity in earnings in the United States. Earlier studies that found an intergenerational elasticity of 0.4 have typically used only five year averages of fathers’ earnings to measure fathers’ perman...

Sorting and Long-Run Inequality¤

Income inequality, intergenerational mobility and the Great Gatsby Curve: is education the key?

It is widely believed that countries with greater levels of income inequality also have lower levels of intergenerational mobility. This relationship, known as the Great Gatsby Curve (GGC), has been prominently cited by high-ranking public policy makers, best-selling authors and Nobel Prize winning academics. Yet relatively little cross-national work has empirically examined the mechanisms thou...
